DALLAS NEWS, Nov. 21, 2016 – Developer Jack Matthews has made his mark on the south side of downtown Dallas with his projects on Lamar Street and in the nearby Cedars neighborhood.

Now Matthews is heading farther south, with a major apartment development in the town of Hutchins.

Matthews Southwest is teaming up with Family Gateway, a nonprofit organization, to build a 336-unit affordable apartment community near Union Pacific Railway’s intermodal terminal in Hutchins.

The project at 700 North J.J. Lemmon Road will be one of the first new rental communities built in years in the southern Dallas County town.

Demand for workforce housing in Hutchins is strong with major employers building distribution centers in the area along interstates 45 and 20.

“The employment down there is growing fast, and there’s been a lack of housing,” Matthews said.

The new apartment project, called Gateway at Hutchins, is planned to open in 2018.

Matthews Southwest has already developed one successful workforce housing apartment community in the Cedars neighborhood called Belleview, which has 164 apartments.

Matthews developed the nearby South Side on Lamar, which includes the historic Sears Roebuck & Co. building.
