According to the 2023 Gateway To Opportunity Luncheon Honorary Co-Chairs Paula and Bay Miltenberger, “As honorary co-chairs of the 2023 Family Gateway Luncheon, we hope you will consider supporting this year’s very special event honoring longtime homeless advocate Peter Brodsky who will receive the Annette G. Strauss Community Service Award. At the luncheon, Peter will moderate a discussion with Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States (2001-2009) and Barbara Pierce Bush, co-founder and board chair of Global Health Corps, on Thursday, October 12, at the Omni Dallas Hotel.

“The luncheon provides vital funding to support Family Gateway’s mission to provide stability and life-changing supportive services for families with children experiencing homelessness.

“Laura Bush is an advocate for literacy, education, and women’s rights. As First Lady, Mrs. Bush advocated the importance of literacy and education to advance opportunity for America’s young people and to foster healthy families and communities. Mrs. Bush continues to promote access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunity for women and girls around the world.

“Barbara Bush leads the NBA’s efforts around health equity, civic engagement, and social justice as Vice President, Social Impact. In this role, she works with NBA offices across the globe to utilize the convening power of basketball to execute thoughtful, community-driven impact strategies relevant to each market. Barbara is co-founder and board member of Global Health Corps (GHC), an organization that mobilizes young leaders to solve the world’s most pressing health issues.

“We are grateful for Peter’s dedication to creating economic opportunity for all people and are pleased to present him with the Annette G. Strauss Community Service Award.

“As a community advocate, Peter believes that all families need access to safety, economic security, and opportunities. In 2015, he launched the revitalization of southern Dallas’ Red Bird Mall which has already brought 1,500 new jobs in the offices, shops, medical facilities, and restaurants.

“Peter has served on numerous boards, including KIPP, KERA, and the UT Southwestern President’s Advisory Board. He is currently serving as Board Chair for Housing Forward and Co-Chair of the Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness Organizations, Policies, and Encampments (HOPE).
