Leave it to Family Gateway to party hearty when it comes to fundraising at its annual Denim and Diamonds. Returning to Gilley’s Dallas on Saturday, November 8, the music had everyone on the dance floor. Of course, it didn’t hurt to have the Annette G. Strauss Community Service Award presented to the staunch philanthropist and landmark developer Jack Matthews. Here’s a report from the field:

Family Gateway’s Denim and Diamonds evening at Gilley’s Saturday, November 8,could have been rebranded as “Boots and Bling” as 350+ guests enjoyed a very festive evening presented by Valiant Residential.

While the cause is very serious, the evening was chock full of great food and dancing music, and lots of young supporters in Stetsons, sequins and designer jeans. Guests enjoyed Gilley’s signature barbecue buffet and signature cocktails.

Longtime Family Gateway advocate Jack Matthews received the Annette G. Strauss Community Service Award.  Jack is known for developing landmark properties, such as Southside on Lamar, Gilley’s, the Omni Dallas Hotel and the upcoming expansion of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. He is also known for his generous dedication to combating family homelessness.

“Jack has been a driving force in expanding affordable housing across Dallas and the Metroplex, partnering with nonprofit agencies to create sustainable solution for families in need,” said Family Gateway CEO Ellen Magnis. Jack was accompanied by his wife Laura.

In keeping with the event’s tradition of minimal speaking and maximum fun, the brief award ceremony was followed by a 5-minute paddle raise that netted $136,000 which equates to $27,200 per minute.

Family Gateway’ mission is to provide stability and life-changing supportive services to families with children experiencing homelessness.

The evening’s activities ramped up with The David Whiteman Band.  Family Gateway Board Member Exa Whiteman, an AT&T executive,  persuaded her husband, David, to bring his 13-piece group who provided a dynamic stage presence.

A retired Dallas firefighter and paramedic, Davis served the city for 28 years before dedicating himself to his music.

“Never let being good get in way of being great,” said David as the band rocked the crowd with everything from Top 40, Hip Hop, Rock, Disco and more.

Corporate partners that were recognized at the party included Matthews, Compatriot Capital, H-E-B, ALN, Esler Companies, Renewal by Andersen, JLB Partners and NexBank.
