August is in the headlights and so are school days. Don’t you know that Office Depot and Bed, Bath and Beyond staffers are bracing for kids and parents flooding in for highfalutin supplies and knickknacks. But there are youngsters who consider the basics like school uniforms and school supplies to be a luxury. One such group is made up of the clients of Family Gateway, where homelessness is the common thread for the multi-generational families.
Knowing this, NorthPark Center is partnering up with Family Gateway all through August to provide for these kids including:
- The Concierge Center just outside Neiman’s on Level One will be accepting gift cards and monetary donations
- Donations of school supplies, uniforms, belts, sock and underwear will be accepted in the center management offices in the East Court near Dillard’s
According to Family Gateway CEO Ellen Magnis, “Partners like NorthPark Center make our life-changing work possible. We are excited for this partnership and can’t wait to see the community come together for this back-to-school drive.”And talk about perfect timing! Tax-free weekend is coming up starting Saturday, August 11. To take full advantage of the freedom, from 1 to 4 p.m. shoppers can “buy uniforms, school supplies or gift cards and donate them” to Family Gateway staffers and ambassadors in NorthPark’s NorthCourt with DJ Blake Wardproviding the music and a raffle for NorthPark Gold underneath Mark di Suvero’s 48-foot-tall “Ad Astra.”
So, when you’re buying a new tablet or backpack, consider a kid who would appreciate a pair of socks or underwear. Better yet, why not have your munchkin(s) help pick out the items to donate?
